Bela Norton Bates, b. April 13, 1815, in Cummington, Hampshire CO. MA, d. Jan 2, 1882, had two wives, 1st, Amelia Hudson. m. July 9, 1842. Amelia died in 1842. Bela married Sarah Jane Perigo March 12, 1843. (She was often identified by the last name of her step-father, also Hudson, but the name is really Perigo.) James Bates, son of second wife, was born in 1843, d. of wounds in Civil war Abt 1964. Sarah Jane and Bela had a daughter, Mary Margaret (known as "Maggie"), b. Sept. 19, 1847. Maggie married Galen Spencer December 28, 1864, in Boonville.
