Trisler, Milton

submitted by Tina Trisler Gilbert

Milton Trisler enlisted Dec 4, 1861 Co I., 53rd Regiment, Indiana Infantry, in Rockport, IN. He was sent to Savannah Tennessee. From Feb 24 to April 30 he was in hospital in Savannah. From May to June 1862, he was home on Sick Furlough. August 1862, sick in hospital in St Louis MO and unfit for military duty. July & Aug 1862, sick in hospital in Evansville, IN. Sept & Oct, 1862, sick in hospital in Evansville, IN. Dec 31, 1862, absent without cause since November 10, 1862. Deserted Nov 10, 1862 at Evansville Hospital.

Wrote all of this because I think it such a terrible thing for a 22 year old man to be injured in his first battle and spend an entire year being sent from one hospital to the other. I certainly don't blame him for deserting, especially since his home was in Rockport, nearby. I can imagine him thinking, "if I am going to die, I am going to die at home".
