Albright Cemetery

N. Front Street East and E. North Street
Elberfeld, Indiana

This information was submitted by J. L. Harbison.

The first burial, according to records available, was in 1873, and the last in 1936. Earlier burials are quite probable but they cannot be confirmed at this time. The Northview Cemetery, located on North Second Street, became the burial ground for members beginning in 1917, and the Albright location was, for the most part, abandoned.

The grounds were found to be in a deplorable condition in the early 1960's. Briars, saplings, and weeds had completely overtaken the cemetery. Graves were sunken and grave markers were broken and/or overturned. The local Boy Scout Troop, under the supervision of Walter Engelhardt, undertook the task of cleaning the facility. Their work did not go for naught, as the site has been kept in a respectable condition since that time.

The Albright Church has experienced mergers over the years and is now known as United Methodist Church. The membership of this organization has overseen the care taking of this cemetery at various intervals of time, but now are not associated with the cemetery. Care taking is left to the Township Government through its Trustee.

A cemetery plat or church records relating to burials are non-existent. Information was obtained from the cemetery, census records, obituaries, historical records, and from families and friends.

NOTES: A listing in the files of the Warrick County Public Library indicates that burials of a family by the name of Ballbrier exists here. There are no stones or written records to substantiate that possibility. However, the old Albright Church records do list a marriage on February 14, 1860, of Henry Kallbrier and Wilhelmina Uhde. No other information is available.

According to the records of the Elberfeld American Legion, there are three veterans of the Civil War buried in this cemetery. They are: William G. Blesch, Julius Heimroth and Fred L. Kohlmeyer.
